What is it?

Alendronate is a medication used to treat and prevent bone loss.

What is it used for?

Alendronate is used mainly for these three problems:

• Osteoporosis – to strengthen bones to prevent fractures.

• Corticosteroid-induced bone loss – treat thinning bones due to long-term steroid use.

• Paget's Disease – to slow down abnormal bone turnover and weakness.

What does it do?

Alendronate slows down bone loss by targeting the bone turnover process.

Dosage

Alendronate is dosed between 5 and 40 mg daily depending on your diagnosis. If you take it weekly (for osteoporosis only), a typical dose is 35 mg for osteoporosis prevention and 70 mg for osteoporosis therapy.

How do I take it?

Swallow the tablet whole (don’t crush) first thing in the morning – on an empty stomach with a full glass of water. Don’t use coffee, tea, juice, or soda to wash it down. Stay upright for at least 30 minutes to protect your esophagus.

Follow the instructions provided with your medication. When in doubt, consult with the pharmacist while picking up new medication.

Possible Side Effects

• Headache or dizziness

• Stomach pain, nausea, gas, or heartburn

• Muscle, bone, or joint pain

• Muscle spasms due to low calcium levels
